Summer Intro Courses

Beginning Iyengar Yoga

Four Fridays, June 5 - 26
12:00 - 1:30pm with Sophie Boller

Four Saturdays, June 6 - 27
2:30-4 pm with Efrat Lavie-Gang

Four Thursdays, July 2 - 23
9:00 - 10:30am with Koren Paalman

Four Saturdays, August 8 - 29
4:00 - 5:30pm with Kishor Stein

For students new to yoga or new to the Iyengar method, this course introduces the basic poses, principles of movement and posture, yoga philosophy and simple relaxation techniques.

In Iyengar yoga, weak parts are strengthened and stiff parts are stretched, thus awakening and realigning the whole body. Benefits include increased vitality and the reduction of stress and anxiety.

This is a four-session course, a cumulative experience with each class building on the one before it. The course is limited to 15 students and the needs of each individual are addressed. Although not required before entering Level 1 classes at IYILA, this course is a great way to begin your study of Iyengar yoga or to refresh your understanding of the basics of the method.

All props, including yoga mats, are provided. Wear shorts or tights & come with an empty stomach. Yoga is practiced with bare feet.

PRECAUTIONS: Please advise your teacher before class if you have any significant health issues (surgeries, high blood pressure, etc.) are pregnant or menstruating so that alternative poses may be suggested.

Attitudes of Asana

Philosophy & Asana
A weekend workshop with Karin O’Bannon

August 7, 8, 9
Friday, 6-8pm
Saturday, 1-4pm
Sunday, 1-4pm

Asana is the physical expression of the Inner Being. As the doer of the asana perfects the alignment of the body, the body aligns with the discriminating factor of the mind.

Reflection on this harmony brings the practitioner to the perception of the truths within the darsan of yoga and ultimately to the wisdom of the True Self.

Friday INNER ATTITUDES:
Discussion of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali.
Saturday OUTER ATTITUDES:
Practice of asana with awareness of how the asana reveals the teachings of yoga.
Sunday OUTER ATTITUDES:
Practice of Iyengar Yoga holds the essence of all the limbs of astanga yoga.

SAVE THE DATES: November 13, 14, 15
Karin will be coming back once more in 2009. This series of workshops will be concerned with how asana and yogic philosophy interact. Each class and/or workshop may be taken separately but each will interrelate with the others. Concepts within the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the Bhagavadgita will be explored through discussion in the Friday night classes. The physical experience of some of these concepts may find expression in the asana classes that follow.

As a devoted student of B.K.S. Iyengar, Karin has been a student and teacher of yoga for 35 years. A member of the Southern California community for over 20 years she attended and then taught at IYILA since its inception. She served on the IYASC board as a member and as president. She also served as president of IYNAUS. She was a long time teacher in the teacher training program at the Los Angeles Institute as well. Older and hopefully wiser now, she finds fascination in the Iyengar method that takes the practice of asana to the level of study of the self and eventually to the seat of the soul.

Prenatal Yoga

A continuing series at the Institute

with Diane Gysbers

“The child in the womb is the product of the living thought of the mother throughout her pregnancy. The healthy body and the healthy mind of the would-be mother provide the fertile soil for the physical, mental and spiritual growth of the child.

It is my conviction that Yoga helps a mother in delivering a robust and healthy child. It keeps her body trim and lessens the tension in her nerves and mind by teaching her the art of relaxation.”
- BKS Iyengar

In this course you will learn simple asanas (yoga poses) that are designed to keep the mother healthy during pregnancy as well as increase sensitivity to the baby and its growth. These asanas aid digestion, circulation, ease breathing and ensure maximum room for the growth and motion of the fetus. Additionally the practice of the asanas is calming and provides stress relief for the mother. It is best to join the class no later than the 28th week of pregnancy if you have not been doing Iyengar Yoga on a regular basis during your pregnancy.

Tuesdays, 12:00 - 1:30pm
Series of six prenatal classes: $108.
Drop-ins are welcome and the fee is $21 per class.
No previous yoga experience is necessary.
